The ORIGINAL & HISTORICAL Downtown Artists’ Warehouse District will open working art studios and exhibition spaces to the public for the official ARTCRAWLHOUSTON 2020.
Since 1992, the tradition of the artists "open studios" takes place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Visitors have the opportunity to pARTicipate in the live/work/show spaces of these neighborhood "urban pioneers". The mission of the ARTCRAWL is to assist the public in understanding contemporary art by directly involving the visitors in a dialogue with local artists in the Artist Warehouse District of Downtown Houston.
DATE: One day event, Saturday, November 21, 2020, from 10AM to 9PM. (Some warehouses will be open on Sunday)
LOCATION: The Original ARTISTS’ WAREHOUSE DISTRICT
(North of Downtown between San Jacinto, Interstate 10 and McKee Street)
PARKING: Street Parking available at each participating warehouse

!DomVoli, founded in November 2019, is a private gym dedicated to the training and education of traditional and modern circus disciplines. NDT Seals Inc, founded in 1992, is a family-owned and managed business. They design, manufacture and distribute the patented NDT Inspection Plug and NDT Inspection Point Labels. History of Participants' Buildings
Erie City Iron Works: 1305 Sterrett & 1310 Nance
Erie City Iron Works dates back to1906 and used to be an iron foundry warehouse where metal was delivered by railroad and stored until it was sold to builders. The metal used to build Houston came through here first. The warehouse has been converted into lofts. Some artists live there, using their places as studios to showcase their work. The other tenants are up-and-coming businesses.
Bisong Art Gallery is located at this building.
M4NL Warehouse: 805 Hardy Street
Fast equipment rental, sawing, cutting and drilling business established in early 1970’s by Homer Allison a.k.a. “Fast Floyd”. Provided equipment and certified specialist in demolition and restoration projects for historical landmarks. June 2001, the Allison family business closed the doors after Tropical Storm Allison. The warehouse was empty until March 2011 when Pat Allison dedicated the business for something different.

Fifth Ward Hotel: 1206 Nance
The former Fifth Ward Hotel building is a near-miraculous survivor of Victorian commercial architecture in Houston. Built in 1883 as a hotel, it was three stories tall with load bearing masonry walls of locally produced brick and cast iron columns supporting timber framed floors. By 1915, the hotel had closed and the building saw a succession of uses. During the 1950s, the two upper floors were removed because the masonry walls were near the point of collapse and the remainder of the historic building was concealed behind sheet metal siding. After a disastrous electrical fire in 1993, the last owner abandoned it. The structure was sensitively rehabilitated in 2002 by Rice Construction Company in consultation with historic preservationist Anna Mod.
In 2003 Michael Morton, AIA of m ARCHITECTS reconfigured the interior for use as an architecture studio and art gallery.
Mother Dog Studios: 720 Walnut
Mother Dog Studios is the oldest surviving artists studios warehouse space in Houston. Surrounded by universities, cathedrals, jails, warehouses, architectural sculptures and skyscrapers somewhere in the natural forest and the cultural forest. Mother Dog Studios is unequivocally in the heart of the vortex of the 4th largest city in the United States. Founded in 1984, by Charlie Jean Sartwelle and John Runnels, it is a 22,000 square foot warehouse with 25 artist studios and an expansive exhibition space called the Mother Dog Museum of Modern Art…
Bienville Furniture Company: 1333 Sterrett / 801 William St.
The Bienville Furniture Company Building on Sterrett Street is Houston’s little touch of European charm with that patina we used to only find in New Orleans. In 1973, home to Reggie Bowman’s Plastics company… the folks who invented the Beverage Buddy can holder that hooks onto your car window. Until around 1994, it survived as Bienville Gallery. We assume it was eponymously named after the Founder of the City of New Orleans Jean Baptiste Le MoyneSieu de Bienville. Thanks go to Pete Dickson for historical archives.
